David completed both his B.E. and PhD. degrees in Biomedical Engineering at NUI, Galway. He received the Medtronic Prize for graduating top of his B.E. class and was awarded an Irish Research Council scholarship to study for a PhD. under the supervision of Dr. Patrick McGarry. His PhD. thesis entitled "Non-linear Anisotropic Mechanical Behaviour of Soft and Hard Tissues" aimed to understand the complex mechanical behaviour in both arterial and trabecular bone tissue using both experimental and computational methodologies. In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious Engineers Ireland Gold Medal for Biomedical Engineering for his PhD. research.
